South America in two stages — from the Caribbean to the ends of the world

Two stages, 43,000 kilometers and six countries — it was the trip of a lifetime for our customers. With their pickup and truckbed camper, they started in Cartagena in Colombia in November 2023. The vehicle had previously been loaded into a container in Bremerhaven and shipped. With a little delay, it finally reached South America and the adventure could begin.

In the coming months, we went from the Caribbean up to the Andes, through Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. They experienced impressive landscapes, colorful cities and friendly people. The trip led past volcanoes, coffee plantations and lagoons until they finally reached Cusco. There, they left the vehicle safely on a camping site over the winter.

The second part of the trip began in September 2024. From Cusco, the route continued through Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and finally to Uruguay. In particular, the endless expanses of the plateau and the natural wonders of South America were remembered. The Salar de Uyuni, the lagoon route, the Andean passes, Torres del Paine National Park and the Perito Moreno glacier — countless places that you will never forget. Finally, they took a boat trip to the San Rafael glacier before the vehicle was loaded back into a container in Montevideo in March 2025 and shipped to Hamburg.

Of course, not everything always went smoothly. There is always a risk of burglaries in tourist regions, diesel was sometimes scarce in Bolivia, and AdBlue also had to be searched for occasionally. But things like that are part of it, and looking back, the feeling of freedom clearly prevails. Wild camping was possible almost everywhere, and thanks to the iOverlander app, they always found beautiful spots by the sea or on rivers, often completely alone in the midst of nature.

They were particularly satisfied with their truckbed camper. The cabin remained stable, even on bad slopes, no screws loosened, and even after months of continuous use, everything worked as on the first day. The thermal inner tent proved to be perfect and provided a pleasant climate in the heat as well as on cold nights in the Andes. The awning provided shade, protection and quickly a piece of home, no matter where they were standing.

After sixteen months and more than 40,000 kilometers, the memory remains of a trip that offered everything: adventure, peace, encounters and unforgettable landscapes. From the tropical coast of Colombia to the heights of the Andes to the plains of Argentina — on the road with a home that remained familiar to them in every situation.
